2025 FWSSR January Newsletter

1 For months, youth across Texas have worked hard to be ready to show. Whether it’s been feeding and caring for a steer, rabbit, goat, barrow, etc. or practicing their skills for a judging contest or similar competition, they’ve been hustling to be ready for when they compete for scholarships and cash premiums. Page 2 Page 4 Page 8 Activities to keep your kids smiling. Date Night never had it so good. Shopping, sipping and so much more. The wait is over. The men and women of rodeo are devoting countless hours in practice and preparation, conditioning themselves and their equine companions for the rigors of professional athletic competition. They’re ready to come to the Will Rogers Memorial Center and Dickies Arena to show their animals, ag mechanics projects or show their skills at robotics, perhaps public speaking or with a fiddle and bow. Or they’ll show rodeo fans in Dickies Arena the grit, determination and athletic prowess necessary to cash in on part of a $1.5 million rodeo payout. It goes to the heart of what it takes – the hustle required to fulfill dreams of an arena victory, or the scholarship used to help prepare one for a career goal. Hustle and Show – it’s what makes the Fort Worth Stock Show legendary. 12 Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo and City of Fort Worth Celebrate a Grand Re-Opening A large crowd came to the Will Rogers Memorial Center (WRMC) on December 17 to witness the grand re-opening of two historic and important buildings for the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo (FWSSR). City of Fort Worth and Stock Show officials spoke to the crowd in a ceremony that filled an additional building; the new Arena 1 that compliments the renovated Sheep and Swine barns located adjacent to Dickies Arena and the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame. “With the Stock Show only one month away, we can hardly wait to see the look on the faces of the thousands of 4-H and FFA youth when they bring their animals into these amazing buildings for competition,” said Stock Show General Manager Matt Carter. “This is truly an exciting day not only for the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, but the City of Fort Worth and the many organizations that utilize our wonderful facilities throughout the year.” Improved lighting, air ventilation, livestock washing facilities and other amenities have transformed the buildings to accommodate thousands of youth that compete in the FWSSR’s swine, sheep and goat shows. The addition of the Arena 1 allows for a 41 percent increase in stalling space for the Stock Show’s sheep, goat and swine exhibitors. Whereas the Sheep and Swine barns were originally built for a single purpose, all three structures feature a “flat floor” design that makes them useful for a wide variety of purposes that can include FWSSR Chairman Philip Williamson addresses the crowd and was joined on the dias by FWSSR Senior Executive Vice President and General Manager Matt Carter, left, Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker and City Council Member District 7 Macy Hill. 13 banquets, trade shows, receptions, meetings, luncheons and, of course, horse shows held at WRMC during non-Stock Show months. The three buildings can easily be converted into 320 horse stalls as well as exercise arenas for use by other WRMC tenants. “Without having to expand our structural footprint, these organizations now have additional stalling capacity and a new climate-controlled exercise arena for their competitors to enjoy during non-Stock Show months,” said Fort Worth Mayor, Mattie Parker. Funding for the project, estimated at $40 million, was borne equally between the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo and the City of Fort Worth. The Sheep and Swine project is the third phase of a four-phase plan to renovate eight WRMC livestock barns originally constructed in 1948. “While improvements to our facilities are important, it is equally important to reward the contestants and exhibitors that make our stock show and rodeo legendary. In this same time period, since 2015, the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo has increased the rodeo purse by 74%, increased the annual livestock premiums paid by 78% and increased the scholarships and educational grants awarded annually to the youth of Texas by 65%.” said Stock Show Chairman Philip Williamson. “In the midst of this, to date the Stock Show and the City of Fort Worth have committed $69.24 million in improvements to these important facilities in Phases I through III. This vision has taken time and required patience, but the results are nothing short of amazing. Our decades long public private partnership is a shining example of what’s possible when government and the private sector come together in a common purpose.” FWSSR Senior Executive Vice President and General Manager Matt Carter welcomes attendees to the new climate-controlled Arena 1 Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker noted the multi-purpose use of the buildings add to Fort Worth’s growing appeal.

14 The life of a first responder has never been more hazardous than it is today. In an alarming trend, more first responders lose their lives to suicide than to tragedies in the line of duty. The Stock Show, in partnership with an organization called R3: Respond. Restore. Resolve. and the American Warrior Association, will bring a new unique feature to the February 1, 7:30 p.m. FWSSR PRORODEO Tournament to draw awareness to this crucial issue. Every guest will receive a complimentary CrowdSync LED bracelet that will allow them to participate in a highenergy music and light show that highlights the R3 program. Confronting the mental health crisis headon by providing a proactive framework focused on mental wellness and resilience, R3 isn’t just a program but a lifeline that provides vital resources to the amazing first responders who serve our communities Click here to see how it works. NOPE. THAT’S NOT ALL! Shining a Light on a First Responder Crisis The FWSSR’s All-Western Parade is one of the oldest in the nation and one of the few that is entirely equine-powered. Taking place January 18 at 11 a.m., fans can line the streets of the parade route starting at the Tarrant County Courthouse on Main Street, then looping around to Houston Street. With more than 140 entries, expect to see nearly 3,000 horses, dozens of wagons, the TCU and other marching bands and this year, the parade is honoring U.S. Olympic team members competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics from the North Texas area.
