The Spade Ranch legacy began more than 120 years ago, in 1889, when DeKalb, Illinois, natives Colonel Isaac Ellwood and his son, W.L. Ellwood, made a simple business trip to West Texas. In 1874, Ellwood became one of the original patent holders of barbed wire when he and his neighbor developed an economical way to keep livestock out of the area’s many farms. The invention quickly changed the Midwest farmland, but the Ellwoods saw a flourishing market in the vast expanses of the West Texas plains. Among the ranchers the Ellwoods met in West Texas were the Snyder brothers. The brothers must have been shrewd businessmen themselves because not only did they resist Ellwood’s sales pitch, they convinced him to buy their 130,000-acre ranch. By the 1960s, the Spade Ranches began a planned crossbreeding program in the cow-calf operation that continues today-although adjusting with changing market demand. Today, the ranches use composite bulls (Simm/Angus and Balancer) crossing the heifers from one mating to the other composite. This maintains a high level of heterosis while producing a uniform calf crop, a stable breed composition and eliminating the need to buy replacement heifers from other sources. Today’s horse breeding program crosses the daughters of their own son of Dual Rey with their son of Cats Merada and vice versa. The objective is to use unrelated bloodlines to produce functional ranch horses with lots of cow sense and bottom. The Spade ranches today consist of seven outfits; the original Renderbrook Spade in Mitchell, Sterling and Coke Counties; Borden Spade in Borden County; North Spade in Motley and Hall Counties; Panhandle Spade in Roberts and Hemphill Counties; Alpine Spade in Brewster and Presidio Counties; Slaughter Spade in Garza County and Mendota Spade in Hemphill County, totaling about 300,000 acres. Wesley Welch is the President and C.E.O. of Spade Ranches and the board of directors include five great-great grandchildren of Isaac Ellwood along with outside directors. A Bar Ranches multigenerational legacy began in 1884 on the Cherokee Reservation in far northern Craig County, Oklahoma. Headquartered today in Claremore, Oklahoma, the A Bar Ranch is a multi-faceted cow-calf ranching operation, spanning six Oklahoma counties and two Texas counties. The Ranch maintains a herd of 4,000 cows and breeds over 1,000 replacement heifers each year. The ranch markets over 8,000 head of replacement females annually through both private treaty and three production sales held at the ranch through their livestock marketing business. The Panther Creek division in Claremore, Oklahoma, is headquarters to the ranch’s equine operation. Mike and Martha began the breeding program in 1985 out of necessity as their ranching business grew. The ranches demand for a quality ranch horse remains today and continues to evolve. In 2020 the ranch was bestowed the American Quarter Horse Association’s “Best of the Remuda” Award. The breeding operation consists of 90 broodmares focused on strong mare families with cow sense, conformation, athleticism, and trainability. A majority of mares are natural serviced to A Bar Ranch Sires consisting of sons of Metallic Cat, Boonlight Dancer, Tanquery Gin, and Dual Rey. The Ranch also hosts its annual Remuda and Colt sale each fall along with their $20,000 A Bar Ranch Horse Futurity. The futurity began in 2018 and has since then awarded more than $120,000 to cowboys competing in four events on A Bar Bred 4 and 5 year olds. a Bar ranch Claremore, OKlahoma • 918-697-6717 • Abarranch.com 6 lot 2 - Consigned by 2025 Invitational Ranch Horse Show & Sale JANUARY 18, 2025 | FT WORTH, TEXAS | JOHN JUSTIN ARENA

In 1898, Eric and Albin Swenson purchased the 79,000 acre Scab 8 Ranch. The ranch was located in the excellent ranch country of King, Cottle, Motley and Dickens counties. The brothers renamed it Tongue River Ranch (TRR) because of its location on the Tongue (South Pease) River, aptly named in reference to black tongue, a nineteenth century disease which wiped out many buffalo in the region. Folklore also states that the many different Indian tribes in the area nicknamed the river “River of Many Tongues,” which was later shortened to Tongue River. Present day owner, Millard Morris purchased the picturesque Tongue River at its current size of 89,000 rolling acres in 1997. In 2007, Tongue River added the scenic 30,000 acre Big Baldy Ranch in New Mexico. The facilities are modern, but the feel of the ranch is that of the old west. The cowboys roll out the chuckwagon pulled by a team of mules twice a year for two weeks in the fall and spring. The cattle are worked just as they were 100 years ago. Paramount to the Tongue River Ranch operation is their outstanding horse program. TRR has concentrated on raising horses that are well built, highly intelligent and incredible athletes. This is evidenced by the numerous ranch rodeo wins, best remuda awards and top horse honors Tongue River Ranch has received and the fact that Tongue River Ranch was the 2011 recipient of the prestigious AQHA Best of Remuda Award. Tongue River Ranch takes great pride in preserving the land for future generations. Continuing tradition and preserving history is a way of life, not a job at Tongue River Ranch. W.T. Waggoner Estate, Inc. was started in 1849 by Dan Waggoner. Dan began buying land in western Wise County in 1870. In 1873, Dan and his 21-year-old son, W.T. (Tom) drove a herd of cattle to market in Kansas and returned with $55,000. This was considered to be a fortune at that time. It was seed money to start an empire. As the land was cleared for settlement, they gradually moved to the west, buying grasslands, having holdings in six counties. Dan passed away in 1902, and W.T. Waggoner continued to expand and operate his ranching interests until 1923, when he formed what is known today as the W.T. Waggoner Estate. The W.T. Waggoner Estate stretches into six counties, with headquarters in Vernon, Texas. Main interests of the company are ranching, oil and approximately 26,000 acres in cultivation. The horses are bred for working ranch purposes and many still carry the bloodline of the famous Quarter Horse, Poco Bueno. Descendants of Dan Waggoner sold the sprawling ranch to Kroenke Ranches in February of 2016. Kroenke Ranches now owns ranches in Canada and the U.S. The main office for the ranch is located in Vernon, Texas. The headquarters for the ranch, known as Zacaweista, is located 13 miles south of Vernon. The ranch consists of approximately 525,000 contiguous acres which makes it the largest ranch in the nation under one fence. It employs approximately 96 people, ranging from cowboys, farm hands, oil field workers, to office staff. Ranch management constantly strives to implement proven modern techniques into the operation, making the W.T. Waggoner Estate, Inc. one of the largest cow-calf enterprises in the country. W.T. Bonds Ranch was founded in 1933 by P.R. (Bob) Bonds after he purchased part of the Mary Hicks Ranch, just north of Saginaw, Texas. Not being a cowboy himself, Bob hired Owen (Big Pete) Burnett in 1944 as ranch foreman. Pete Bonds, Bob’s youngest son, was mentored by Burnett following Bob’s death in 1954 and eventually took over the fulltime management of the ranch in 1970. Historically a cow/calf operation, under Pete’s management, the operation became more diversified – expanding its cow/calf genetics, grazing yearlings on leased and purchased land in various states, and finishing cattle in feedyards. The ranch expanded with the purchase of land in Falls and Hemphill counties in Texas and in Union and Colfax counties in New Mexico. Under Burnett’s guidance, Bonds knew the importance of a good ranch horse and became dedicated to breeding quality ranch quarter horses. He needed a stout and smart horse that he could count on every day. In 1971, Bonds purchased mares and fillies from Mrs. Ott Burnett, a cousin of Burk Burnett. As thanks for being generous in a business deal, Senator William Blakely gifted Bonds Ranch a breeding stallion, Concho Jim, in 1974. In 1991, Pete was AQHA World Champion in Amateur Team Penning on Concho Juan Vito, by Concho Jim and out of one of those original mares. These original genetics are still prevalent in the broodmare remuda along with modern cow horse, cutting, and roping lines. With such diverse operations and locations, Bonds Ranch quarter horses must be versatile. Horses need to withstand the mountains and rocky terrain of New Mexico as well as the muddy oat fields of Marlin, Texas. Ranch horses are used for every phase of ranch life – from dragging calves to doctoring yearlings to sorting cows. They are also used in ranch rodeo, ranch horse competitions, cutting, sorting, reined cow horse, and roping. In the last couple of years, Smith has added the historic Swenson Flattop Ranch in Stamford, TX, as well as the Waurika, OK, Division. There are also multiple ranches in our Southern Division that stretch from Waco to Mt. Pleasant. Smith Cattle Company, Northern Division, is a cow/calf operation that produces Angus and Charolais breeding bulls for all of Smith's 15,000 head commercial cow herd. All ranch calves are retained and grazed on wheat at our Waurika, OK, Rosebud, NM, Stamford, TX, and Jericho, TX Ranches. In addition to this we operate a large highrisk stocker program on all Smith ranches. These cattle will finish at a Smith Cattle feedyard. smith cattle co. channing, Texas • 325-226-2895 20 lot 9 - Consigned by 2025 Invitational Ranch Horse Show & Sale JANUARY 18, 2025 | FT WORTH, TEXAS | JOHN JUSTIN ARENA

In 1876, long on land and short on cash, the Lone Star State set aside 3,050,000 acres in its Panhandle to trade for a new capitol building. A Chicago syndicate led by merchant John V. Farwell and his brother Senator Charles B. Farwell began the construction of the unrivaled red-granite capitol in Austin. With the deed to three-million acres in hand, the Farwell brothers created the Capitol Freehold Land & Investment Company, Limited and turned to England to borrow five million dollars to develop the raw, wild Texas land into the largest cattle ranch under one fence in the world. The Farwell brothers began selling land to repay British bondholders in the early 1900’s. Land sales were made to outfits such as the Matador, the LIT, and Reynolds. At the time the debt was repaid, the Farwell’s were left with title to one-million acres, the last of which was sold in 1963. In 2022, descendants of John V. Farwell repurchased part of the Rita Blanca division near Channing. After a 59-year slumber, the legendary brand rides into a new era with kin of the original owners running XIT branded cattle and horses on Capitol Syndicate land once again. The XIT runs commercial cattle and offers premium AmericanWagyu to select restaurant partners. The XIT believes ranch horses represent western heritage and the legacy passed down from the horsemen who pioneered our way of life. Like those who came before us, we breed American Quarter horses that are hardy, conformationally correct, athletic, and have great dispositions. We believe that conformation is paramount in breeding ranch or performance horses. Correct conformation is the foundation for ability, longevity, and good movement. All XIT horses must be capable of performing all the work necessary on a working cattle ranch. Our performance horses, the best of the best, compete at the highest levels possible in NCHA and NRCHA events. The XIT horse program is anchored by 2012 NCHA Horse of the Year, Kit Kat Sugar (High Brow Cat x Sugar N Dulce by Smart Little Ricochet, LTE $240,903), whose offspring have earned more than $12 million in the show pen. Show mares come to branding to drag calves to the fire and ranch mares are ridden before entering the broodmare band. As a mare focused breeding program, the XIT plans generations in advance to breed top tier horses for the ranch and show pen. Today, the cowboys of the XIT brave snow, wind, and extreme heat in both the Texas Panhandle and the Colorado division raising beef for America, just like those who came before them. The ranch is once again feeding our great country and preserving traditions of the American West. From one man’s bootheel to the hides of cattle, the XIT brand remains a saga of the West. From all accounts, the Pitchfork Land and Cattle Company would not exist if it wasn't for Daniel Baldwin Gardner and Eugene Flewellyn Williams, both cousins and life-long friends. They were born in Mississippi in 1851 to plantation-owning families. In 1871, tales of abundant opportunity in Texas lured Gardner to Fort Griffin, located near present-day Albany. In February of 1877, Gardner was one of 17 men who drafted plans for what was to become one of the most powerful and prestigious livestock organizations in the world, which is known today as the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. In the summer of 1881, Gardner learned that Jerry Savage, who had been running cattle on the South Wichita River under a Pitchfork brand, was interested in selling land, equipment and stock. Needing capital, Gardner thought of his boyhood friend and cousin, Eugene Williams. In 1881, Williams journeyed to Fort Worth and after a dinner meeting announced he was ready to close the deal, without seeing either the land or the cattle. Williams said he was investing in the venture solely because he had the highest regard for his cousin, Dan Garder. Williams wrote a check and took the night train back to St. Louis. The property Gardner and Williams purchased included 2,600 longhorn cattle, 70 horses, wagons and camp equipment, but little land. They did obtain rights to the ranch that bordered the South Wichita River in eastern Dickens and western King counties. Wishing to expand, but lacking capital, the two men found two willing investors from Texas, A.P. Bush, Jr. and Samuel Lazarus and two from St. Louis, A.D. Brown and W. H. Carroll. In St. Louis on December 29, 1883, the partners gathered to adopt the by-laws and elect officers of the newly formed corporation known as the Pitchfork Land and Cattle Company. Gardner was chosen to be general manager, a position he held until his death in June of 1928. Six managers have filled the vacancy left by Gardner. These included Rudolph Swenson, Virgil Parr, D. Burns, Jim Humphreys and Bob Moorhouse. Today, the ranch is managed by Brooks Hodges. The Pitchfork Land and Cattle Company stretches some 175,000 acres in two west Texas counties and acreage in Waurika, Oklahoma known as the Pitchfork OK Ranch. The descendants of Eugene Williams continue to operate the 141-year-old ranch in the same conservative manner as did the ranch’s founders. pitchfork Land & cattle Guthrie, Texas • 806-284-2223 • ThePitchforkRanch.com 24 lot 11 - Consigned by 2025 Invitational Ranch Horse Show & Sale JANUARY 18, 2025 | FT WORTH, TEXAS | JOHN JUSTIN ARENA

The Tee Cross Ranches got its beginning under the ownership of Robert C. Norris in 1954. The famous Tee Cross brand was the first brand registered in the State of Colorado and is synonymous with quality in both its Quarter Horse and cattle operations. Robert C. “Bob" Norris had a rich and prestigious history in the cattle, cutting and Quarter Horse world. Serving as the President of the American Quarter Horse Association in 1982 was the culmination of years of service to an industry he loved so much. The horse division was relocated from Colorado to Mineral Wells, Texas in 2021. The dedication to producing top quality performance horses, however, has stayed the same. Bob Norris has always looked for horses with good dispositions and confirmation, and that their athleticism and performance would automatically come from those traits. Cowtowns Cat is one of the studs standing at Tee Cross Ranches Horse Division. He is an own son of the great High Brow Cat and out of a Haidas Magic mare. He has NCHA earnings of over $30K and NRCHA earnings of $9K, in a very limited showing. The ranch also stands Exxpedia, who is a Spots Hot son and out of the great mare Shes Twice as Smooth.
