1 SEPT 2024 THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE FORT WORTH STOCK SHOW & RODEO September is here and as the daylight minutes begin to shorten and the temps moderate, (albeit some days only slightly) Fort Worth crosses the minds of many livestock and Western lifestyle enthusiasts. It may be the 4-H or FFA member caring for the animal they hope will find show ring glory at the Will Rogers Memorial Center. Or perhaps he or she is the arena athlete making plans for what’s commonly referred to as the “Texas Swing” of winter rodeos. Maybe it’s a vendor working to ensure they’ve got plenty of inventory for eager Stock Show shoppers. Regardless of who they are it’s likely that “Fort Worth crosses their mind” over and over this time of year. Fall has only gotten more hectic for FWSSR staff and many volunteers. In the last four years, the addition of shooting sports competitions, an acclaimed Western art exhibition and sale and youth art seminars have broadened the Stock Show’s scope. The growth continues this fall with the addition of an international wine competition and a high school BBQ contest. No doubt, Fort Worth is the place to be this fall for exciting events and competitions that support the Stock Show’s mission. And, come January 17 through February 8, it will be where tens of thousands of cowboys, cowgirls, livestock exhibitors, vendors, equestrian competitors and many others will come to “hustle and show” at the 2025 Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo. So, start getting Fort Worth on your mind because this thing is legendary. 5 FWSSR STAFF ANNOUNCEMENTS 5 Jessica Birge Named FWSSR Administrative Director – Rose Alvarez Joins Full-time Staff Rose Alvarez Jessica Birge Lisa Slaton If you happen to drop by the FWSSR offices, you’re likely to see a new, but familiar face among the full-time Stock Show staff. Rose Alvarez was named the Stock Show’s volunteer director effective July 8, filling a position previously held by Jessica Birge. Birge was named administrative director, assuming the crucial and wide-ranging scope of administrative and operational responsibilities for the Show. Lisa Slaton, who has served as administrative manager since 2021, recently announced her intention to retire within the coming months. Alvarez has served in various Stock Show volunteer capacities since 2012 when she joined the Ambassador Committee. She was elected to the Stock Show’s board of directors in 2015 and named to the executive committee in 2018. Prior to joining the Stock Show’s staff, Alvarez served as a sales executive in the men’s custom clothing department at M.L. Leddy’s Boots & Saddlery. Birge’s Stock Show roots run deep. A calf scramble winner in 1993, she joined the full-time staff in 1998. She left to devote her full attention to newborn twins in 2004 but returned in 2007 as a livestock show assistant before being named volunteer director in 2022. “We are excited that Jessica is taking this new role,” said FWSSR General Manager Matt Carter. “While we’ll miss Rose’s participation on the board and executive committee, having her join the staff as volunteer director will strengthen our team. We are very fortunate and grateful for the dedication that Lisa Slaton gives us and to have some overlap in these positions in the coming months will help ensure smooth transitions.” 2025 FWSSR Rodeo Performance Calendar JANUARY 17-18 JANUARY 19 JANUARY 20 JANUARY 21-22 challenge JANUARY 23 JANUARY 24 - FEBRUARY 8 SUPPORT THESE SPECIAL DAYS! 6 Owning a priceless artistic representation of the American West is on almost every Stock Show fan’s bucket list and for the fourth consecutive year, Cowboy Artists of America (CAA) are happy to oblige, bringing their 58th Annual Exhibition & Sale to the Will Rogers Memorial Center November 1 and 2. “We are delighted to again be the presenting sponsor of the Cowboy Artists of America exhibition and sale,” said FWSSR President Brad Barnes. “The Show’s relationship with them over the past four years has grown and we are particularly grateful to their members who have so generously mentored young artists involved in the Show’s Art Contest program.” The event kicks off at 5 p.m. November 1 at the Cattle Raisers Museum with an invitation-only awards dinner and a retrospective of the John and Charlotte Kimberlin Collection. Among the artists in the collection are CAA members Joe Beeler, Bill Owens, Tom Ryan, George Phippen, James Boren as well as other renowned cowboy artists, including Maynard Dixon, Robert Lougheed, Olaf Wieghorst, William Leigh, Frank Hoffman, G. Harvey, and Frank Tenney Johnson. A rare opportunity to see these seldom–seen pieces, the collection will be available for viewing by the public October 11 through November 3. A preview of the CAA Exhibition & Sale, also invitation only, will follow at 6:30 in the Round Up Inn located in the Amon G. Carter Jr. Exhibits Hall building. November 2 the public is invited to enjoy a featured artist autograph session beginning at 9 a.m. followed by a Native American talk by noted scholars Ken Weidner and Curtis Carter. This special presentation will be a hands-on demonstration showing period-correct items such as bonnets, horse tack, Parfleche (a folded carrying bag), tipi setup, weaponry, regalia, and camp items. Ken and Curtis have spent decades of intense study in the Plains Indian life and culture. Museums across the country have used their knowledge and their handmade items for program presentations and as period-correct replicas for permanent display. Demonstrations by CAA artists will take place at 11:30 a.m. with the exhibition and sale kicking off at 5 p.m. They will include a variety of media, including sculpting, painting and drawing. The 2023 event generated more than $1.2 million from buyers across 17 states. The CAA was formed in 1965 by artists Joe Beeler, Charlie Dye, John Hampton and George Phippen. Through the years its mission has been “to authentically preserve and perpetuate the culture of Western life in fine art.” The CAA’s Joe Beeler Foundation promotes the development of young artists in traditional Western art through workshops, mentoring and scholarships. Proceeds from the annual sale and exhibit help fund the foundation’s outreach program. As part of that outreach, prior to the public opening Fort Worth area students are invited to view the exhibit and visit with artists. The CAA will host the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo’s Youth Art Sale along with its November 2 sale. Seven students collectively earned more than $13,000 from their sales in 2023, with 100% of the profits going towards furthering their education. In addition, CAA members will also mentor young artists during the 2025 FWSSR at workshops geared toward high school art contest participants. 7 FWSSR AWARDS NEARLY $100,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS TO TEXAS FFA STUDENTS Hurricanes posed no problem for Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo officials who made their way to Houston on the heels of Hurricane Beryl to award $96,000 to 12 deserving students at the 2024 Texas FFA Convention July 10. “The Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo is always thrilled to award these scholarships in fulfillment of its mission to support the education of Texas youth in agriculture,” said FWSSR President Brad Barnes. “Having the opportunity to personally meet these students and witness their accomplishments is truly inspiring.” “With the 2025 Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo less than six months away, we’re already looking forward to seeing the thousands of students who come to the show each year,” said FWSSR General Manager Matt Carter. “The students who received scholarships this summer are exemplary role models for Texas youth who share a common goal to achieve success in agriculture in its many forms.” Each student was awarded an $8,000 scholarship. More than $1.1 million was awarded by the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo to deserving scholarship winners during the organization’s 2024 fiscal year. 2024 Texas FFA FWSSR Scholarship Recipients: From left to right, • Lauren Callaway, Ira • Andrew Cole, Madisonville • Kaitlyn Garner, Blue Ridge • Hudson Glenn, Riesel • Landon Holmes, Harper • Kaitlynn Keilers , Waller • Kaleb Leutwyler, Cushing • Cooper Mau, Fayetteville • Madison Mutina, Riesel • Juliana Sirmans, White Deer • Kyler Wendt, College Station Not pictured: Cyrah Decker, Iowa Park 7
88 Each year, FWSSR staff evaluate potential improvement to competitions, auctions and other offerings. Exciting changes for the invitational ranch gelding sale, the new Mustang Magic Horses & Horsemen of the World and a new 5D barrel race competition will bring fresh changes for 2025 FWSSR. While the Invitational Ranch Horse Show and Sale has traditionally been Ranching Heritage Weekend’s grand finale Sunday afternoon, the prestigious sale will be moved to Saturday, January 18, where the highly anticipated auction will draw new attention to weekend horse show and sale activities. Immediately following the legendary ranch horse sale which begins at 10 a.m., the FWSSR Heritage Sale, that includes the AQHA Best of the Remuda Sale and the Stock Show’s Select Quarter Horse Sale, will enhance the day’s opportunities to evaluate and purchase horses from some of the industries most noted ranches, breeders and trainers. It will all add to the excitement of Ranching Heritage Weekend presented by Ariat. “Three sales of this magnitude will be amazing,” said Horse Show Director Lauren Murray. “This is a fantastic way to highlight these historic ranches on one of the Show’s most highly attended days, while the public also gets a chance to see how vibrant and important ranch life is to our state.” Murray explained that horses featured in the ranch horse sale are vetted by a committee that meets each Spring. “The ranch horse committee reviews ranches that have expressed interest in participating in the Invitational Ranch Horse Show & Sale and have submitted a background information form. They are reviewed along with ranches that have consigned in the past and we look at what new possibilities there are. The committee tries to keep the invitations limited to true working ranches.” INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR - MUSTANG STYLE For more than a decade, the FWSSR fans have been amazed at the talents displayed by formerly wild horses in its Mustang Magic competition. In 2025, they’ll find even more jaw-dropping performances to bring them to their feet when Mustang Champions, producers of Mustang Magic, presented by AgTrust Farm Credit, bring “Horses & Horsemen of the World,” to the Will Rogers Coliseum floor. Featuring Australian horseman and champion colt starter Dan James, five-time PRCA Dress Act of the Year and Texan Bobby Kerr, Charro Tomas Garcilazo and family of Mexico, as well as British movie horse trainer and actor Ben Atkinson, “Horses & Horsemen of the World,” is set to provide an astounding display of horsemanship. “I guarantee that people who love the beauty and athleticism of horses will absolutely love this show,” said Murray. “All of these horsemen have performed across the world stage and we’re so fortunate to have them coming to Fort Worth in 2025.” ATTENTION BARREL RACERS! Barrel racing will bring the excitement during the final week of the Show as the FWSSR hosts its firstever 5D barrel race February 4 in cooperation with Wild West productions. HORSE SHOW DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES IMPORTANT CHANGES
9 “Barrel racing is a growing industry and we have always had an exciting competition with the Timed Event Challenge,” said Murray. “The broader barrel racing community will have an additional opportunity to compete in the 5-D format and we are also adding a $2,000 scholarship to the fastest time by youth 14-18 in the 5D barrel race.” In a 5D barrel race, there are five divisions and times are divided into individual divisions by accumulating half seconds. For example, if the fastest time, a 1D, is 14.5 seconds, then a 2D would be 15 seconds, 3D would be 15.5 seconds, a 4D 16 seconds and 5D 16.5 seconds. This allows for a wider pool of experience in horses and riders, with a greater disbursement of prize money. Limited to 200 entries, the barrel race will offer $6,000 in added money. Pre-entries open December 2nd at 8 a.m. on the Next Gen Rodeo App, and close on December 30 at 4 p.m. Murray noted that horse show fans can also look forward to another development to be announced in the upcoming newsletter. “Details are still being ironed out, but as a little hint, we know there will be plenty of people who will ‘jump for joy’ when they hear the news,” she said. All horse events are included in the price of grounds admission. Tickets for Mustang Magic competition will go on sale September 9 and will include same-day grounds admission. Rodeo and concert tickets are sold separately. For more information, go to www.fwssr. com. 9 5-time PRCA Dress Act of the Year Bobby Kerr . Australian horseman and champion colt starter Dan James. 11 SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT AUSTIN JOURDE CENTRAL MARKET Whenever two iconic brands come together, you can count on there being a powerful result and so is the case with the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo’s partnership with Central Market. “When we opened the first Central Market/H-E-B store in North Texas 23 years ago, we immediately knew we needed to support the mission of Fort Worth’s longest running tradition,” said Central Market Fort Worth General Manager Austin Jourde. “H-E-B has a long history with junior livestock shows across the state and supporting hardworking students through stock show scholarship programs. Locally, we have supported students through the Stock Show sale since our store opened in 2001.” Jourde said the history runs even deeper when it comes to the FWSSR and H-E-B’s individual impact on the state of Texas. “H-E-B was founded in Kerrville, Texas, less than 10 years after the first FWSSR. Both have become iconic Texas brands rich in Texas history and known for giving back to local communities,” he said. Central Market’s primary focus in its support is the popular Mooseum Experience which ties free admission to the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame, the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History and the Texas Cattle Raisers Museum into the price of general admission to the Show. Guests who have a membership with any of the museums also receive complimentary general admission to the Show. While the relationship has nothing to do with the wide array of the fine foods and wine offered at Central Market, it does have everything to do with feeding the public’s interest in the Fort Worth community, said Jourde. “The Mooseum Experience is a great opporunity for Stock Show attendees to expand their visit beyond the FWSSR and enjoy surrounding nationally known museums,” he said. “It’s important to us to make them accessible for all visitors to enjoy the many assets our city has to offer.” Central Market, which boasts an extensive wine selection featuring wines from around the world, is also a supporter of the Show’s Vine 2 Wine Wine Camp program. Jourde also notes that FWSSR President Brad Barnes and rodeo announcer Bob Tallman, are regulars to the store. “Even the bullfighters come over here for lunch during the rodeo,” he said. Jourde is not without his own lifelong connection to agriculture and the Stock Show. Raised on ranches in South Texas, Jourde watched his father’s care of the land and livestock and saw the respect his father gained as a livestock show judge. “The ranching culture is in my blood,” he said. “When I joined Central Market/H-E-B in 2001, I immediately became involved in the FWSSR Stock Show sale with other H-E-B partners and community leaders. My wife and I have also created our own FWSSR traditions enjoying the rodeo and other events every year with our two sons. It is something we look forward to attending every year.” 11 Central Market Fort Worth General Manager Austin Jourde has been key to the development of Cetnral Market’s partnership in the Show’s Mooseum experience and Vine to Wine events.
