6 Owning a priceless artistic representation of the American West is on almost every Stock Show fan’s bucket list and for the fourth consecutive year, Cowboy Artists of America (CAA) are happy to oblige, bringing their 58th Annual Exhibition & Sale to the Will Rogers Memorial Center November 1 and 2. “We are delighted to again be the presenting sponsor of the Cowboy Artists of America exhibition and sale,” said FWSSR President Brad Barnes. “The Show’s relationship with them over the past four years has grown and we are particularly grateful to their members who have so generously mentored young artists involved in the Show’s Art Contest program.” The event kicks off at 5 p.m. November 1 at the Cattle Raisers Museum with an invitation-only awards dinner and a retrospective of the John and Charlotte Kimberlin Collection. Among the artists in the collection are CAA members Joe Beeler, Bill Owens, Tom Ryan, George Phippen, James Boren as well as other renowned cowboy artists, including Maynard Dixon, Robert Lougheed, Olaf Wieghorst, William Leigh, Frank Hoffman, G. Harvey, and Frank Tenney Johnson. A rare opportunity to see these seldom–seen pieces, the collection will be available for viewing by the public October 11 through November 3. A preview of the CAA Exhibition & Sale, also invitation only, will follow at 6:30 in the Round Up Inn located in the Amon G. Carter Jr. Exhibits Hall building. November 2 the public is invited to enjoy a featured artist autograph session beginning at 9 a.m. followed by a Native American talk by noted scholars Ken Weidner and Curtis Carter. This special presentation will be a hands-on demonstration showing period-correct items such as bonnets, horse tack, Parfleche (a folded carrying bag), tipi setup, weaponry, regalia, and camp items. Ken and Curtis have spent decades of intense study in the Plains Indian life and culture. Museums across the country have used their knowledge and their handmade items for program presentations and as period-correct replicas for permanent display. Demonstrations by CAA artists will take place at 11:30 a.m. with the exhibition and sale kicking off at 5 p.m. They will include a variety of media, including sculpting, painting and drawing. The 2023 event generated more than $1.2 million from buyers across 17 states. The CAA was formed in 1965 by artists Joe Beeler, Charlie Dye, John Hampton and George Phippen. Through the years its mission has been “to authentically preserve and perpetuate the culture of Western life in fine art.” The CAA’s Joe Beeler Foundation promotes the development of young artists in traditional Western art through workshops, mentoring and scholarships. Proceeds from the annual sale and exhibit help fund the foundation’s outreach program. As part of that outreach, prior to the public opening Fort Worth area students are invited to view the exhibit and visit with artists. The CAA will host the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo’s Youth Art Sale along with its November 2 sale. Seven students collectively earned more than $13,000 from their sales in 2023, with 100% of the profits going towards furthering their education. In addition, CAA members will also mentor young artists during the 2025 FWSSR at workshops geared toward high school art contest participants.
