WE LOVE A PARADE One of the greatest of rodeo traditions is the parade and the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo All Western Parade is rooted in history that lives on today. The parade first hit the pavement in 1896 and in 1909, a total of three parades were staged, the first of which included a band of Kiowa and Commanche tribe members led by the infamous chief, Quanah Parker. Show cattle were herded along the street in the second parade, the only time in the parade’s history. Since it’s beginning the parade has been “non-motorized,”mostly due to the rationing of gas and rubber in its early years, and the tradition continues. TCU’s Horned Frog Band became the lead band in 1944 and remains a highlight today. In 1970, Walter Smith, an African American, applied for his group to participate and in their second year, won the “Best Dressed Entry.” Smith later became a member of the parade committee and that group, The Circle L Riding Club,is still a parade favorite. The 2022 edition of the parade will roll through downtown Fort Worth January 15. Reserved seating is available, which includes face painting and other activities in Sundance Square. Ticket sales will end at noon January 13. Prices are: Sundance Square - $25 Convention Center - $15 Tickets must be purchased in advance. No on-site purchases. Tickets purchased after December 31st will be WILL CALL only and MUST be picked up at the Dickies Arena Box Office in advance of the parade. Go to fwssr.com for more info.
3 THE STOCK SHOW! When the world’s best rodeo athletes ride and rope at the 2022 FWSSR PRORODEO Tournament, they’ll be under the best roof in the nation. Since opening its doors in October of 2019, Dickies Arena has held some remarkable events with no signs of slowing down. And to highlight the success, Fort Worth’s beloved Dickies Arena was recently nominated for Arena of the Year in 2021 by Pollstar Magazine. Within the 9,300-seat venue for rodeo, there is truly not a bad seat in the house thanks to the team’s dedication to the details for the fan experience. To aid in that fan experience, Dickies Arena is home to the second-largest continuous 360-degree screen in North America, measuring 105 feet across and 26 feet tall. And to accompany the visual experience, the sound quality resembles that of a world-class performance theater. Put those two factors together and patrons are bound to experience a live performance like no other. Dickies Arena has a variety of incredible events scheduled in 2022 including basketball, concerts, lacrosse, gymnastics, “Disney On Ice,” and others. For more information about upcoming events please visit DickiesArena.com. A new personality will be taking advantage of the world-class technology in Dickies Arena with the appearance of famed rodeo barrel man and entertainer, Matt Merritt of Olin, North Carolina. For 15 years, Matt Merritt has been entertaining thousands in arenas all over the nation. Some people call him a barrel man, others a rodeo clown. He says his life is spent on the road with his makeup kit. PBR fans will recognize him as the exclusive entertainer of the PBR Velocity Tour. He keeps crowds across the country and world laughing with his routines, jokes and dance moves, an act worthy of the 360-degree video screen. So, keep an eye on Matt and don’t be surprised if he jumps the rail and brings the show to you! GROWING THROUGH INNOVATION WIRED FOR SOUND AND FUN
4 FROM HUMANS TO HORSES CARING FOR ATHLETES, BOTH HUMAN AND ANIMAL, IS A PRIORITY FOR THE STOCK SHOW With a nod, the gate crashes open and for eight seconds, the dance of animal and cowboy is performed in front of thousands. In most cases, the ride ends successfully with the rider tipping his hat to the crowd and the bull, or horse, sauntering back to a paddock to take a drink, grab a bite of hay and hang out until its next performance usually days away. On occasion, though, the ride could result in a season-ending injury for the cowboy, and even rarer still, an injury that sends an animal home to spend the rest of its life in a pasture. While riders twist and turn with the bulls and broncs, behind the chutes stands a Justin SportsMedicine Team professional, closely watching for any sign of injury once the rider hits the dirt. Sometimes it’s the quick wave of a bullfighter’s hand or a rider who’s slow to stand that calls them to action, but no matter, within seconds they’re at the rider’s side ready to assist. For more than 40 years, Justin “Healers,” as they were once called, have provided medical and therapeutic support to rodeo athletes across the U.S., all at no cost, thanks to the support of Justin Boot Company and the insight of its patriarch and former Stock Show Chairman, John Justin Jr., who committed to funding the program in 1981. Serving as the program’s medical director is Dr. Tandy Freeman, an orthopedic surgeon based in Dallas, while nationally certified athletic trainer Mike Rich of Gilbert, Arizona, oversees the program. Both have seen numerous changes to the effort as well as in the facilities where they have worked over the past decade — perhaps none more welcome or as well equipped than the superior facilities available at Dickies Arena. “We went from a tiny room in the Coliseum to basically a facility where we can take care of multiple athletes at the same time,” said Dr. Freeman. “We have an actual athletic training room that’s equivalent to what you’d see in any other professional or collegiate arena. So, from the standpoint of our ability to take care of the athletes, it’s made a huge difference in terms of what we can actually do for them.” Rich is tasked with ensuring that a team of doctors and therapists are available at more than 125 rodeos each year. In excess of 750 volunteers are also engaged in the program, including many leading physicians in the rodeo’s city, particularly in Fort Worth, all of whom volunteer their time. “Tandy is wired in with medical people all over the area, who can be everything from an ob-gyn to family practice to specialty people who we can get them in to see and take care of them while they’re here,” said Rich. The nature of the sport can be a treatment challenge, as cowboys and cowgirls move from city to city, and seek out therapeutic treatment or continued assessment of an injury at each stop. Rich noted that advanced technology has helped create a network allowing the team to evaluate the needs of the athlete based on what treatments have been applied at other rodeos, rather than starting at ground zero.
5 ANIMALS ARE ATHLETES, TOO Rafter G Rodeo, the producer of the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo for more than 40 years, is not only in the business of rodeo,it’s in the livestock breeding business as well. Under the management of Jim Gay, the company also raises rough stock, including bucking horses and bulls, to become the animal athletes needed for the rigors of rodeo competition. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are invested each year in the rodeo stock industry, making these hooved athletes extremely valuable to those who care for them. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association has established 60 rules to which rodeos must comply in order to maintain their status as a sanctioned event. Fall short, and sanctioning could be in jeopardy. For Gay, that means going above and beyond the rules to ensure all of his stock is in the best condition possible. “We contract with a number of stock producers to provide the amount of stock we’ll need for the length of the rodeo,” said Gay. “This rodeo should have the best stock available – National Finals calibre stock, and that’s what these cowboys have come to expect. So, there is a significant responsibility in caring for these animals, keeping them healthy and in great shape. These animals may only work eight seconds in a day, but we work all of their lives to keep them healthy.” Producers and rodeos are required to be familiar with all 60 rules; rules the Fort Worth Stock Show follows to the letter. Significant is providing equipment meant to maintain animal health, including protective headgear for team roping steers, straps that are neoprene or fleece lined for rough stock and chutes designed for animal safety. Even the walls of Dickies Arena are designed to absorb an impact and no major injuries have occurred since its first installation in Will Rogers Coliseum in 2018. Should an animal be injured, a veterinarian is on standby to assess the injury and provide necessary treatment. Furthermore, the PRCA judges in the arena are required to ensure that contestants adhere to the rules as well. Spurs must be dull and tie-down ropers are assessed fines if they jerk a calf over backwards and contestants can be called for “unnecessary roughness” and disqualified or fined if they abuse an animal, in or out of the arena. When an athlete is injured, the response is pre-planned and makes for a calm approach, which helps calm the injured rider. “Calm is contagious. If we stay calm, the rider stays calm,” said Freeman. “Every time somebody gets hurt, and depending on the injury, there is a system of triage to decide whether the rider goes straight to an ambulance or comes back to the training room,” said Rich. There is never a hurry to get the rider out the arena, but at the same time, there is usually no reason to assess the injury in the arena. “The rider’s safety is paramount. So it’s not about how fast we need to get them out of there. It’s about what we need to do to safely extract them,” said Freeman. “Now that said, there are a lot of things that could be done, but with really no reason to do it in the arena, we take them back to the training room. On the other hand, if you’ve got an athlete who is impaired, they’re unconscious or whatever the issue is, it’s paramount that he’s stabilized enough to transport him safely to where he needs to be.” In the 2020 rodeo alone, the team treated 262 contestants, including 59 new injuries, during the FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament. “We actually keep a log of ‘body parts’ we treat as well, so that year we addressed 439 areas with 745 treatments, and provided tape to 209 contestants we have taught to tape themselves,” said Rich. Tom Feller, director of event marketing for Justin Boots, noted that John Justin, who first volunteered as an usher for the Stock Show, would be proud of what the program that bears his name has accomplished. “The way Mr. Justin conducted his life and continues to support the community through the Jane and John Justin Foundation is really about who they were,” said Feller. “John and Jane were always very, very giving — always concerned about giving back. That goes back to his grandfather who started the company. He said he wanted to leave behind an institution that would uphold the spirit and standards of the true West. Even with Mr. Justin gone, we continue to carrying out his wishes.” Six-Time PRCA World Champion Bull Rider Sage Kimzey receives therapeutic support from the Justin SportsMedicine Team.
