JEFF FOXWORTHY CLINT BLACK FEBRUARY 5 — 8 P.M. Join the Stock Show for a special acoustical evening with Grammy and Academy Award winning artist Ryan Bingham. It’s authentic, powerful, and the songs are rooted in real life - in survival and sacrifice and, yes, sometimes just having a damn good time. Nobody making music today has a voice like Bingham’s, one that has the worn and weary character of an old fighter more than twice his age but the power of a young man. It’s an intoxicating mixture that reaches new levels on his most recent album American Love Song. RYAN BINGHAM JANUARY 19 — 8:30 P.M. With a legendary career spanning more than four decades, KANSAS has firmly established itself as one of America’s iconic classic rock bands. Old 97’s is an American alternative country band from Dallas, Texas. Formed in 1993, they have released 12 studio albums, and one live album. Eight sets of reins — 40 pounds of leather — is what it takes to drive the thundering team of America’s most famous hitch — The Budweiser Clydesdales. The Budweiser Clydesdales will take to Dickies Arena throughout the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo where they will perform precision maneuvers reminiscent of the days when beer deliveries were made by the wagon load. Riding with them will be their Dalmation mascot, representing the role these spotted dogs played as coach dogs because they ran between the wheels of coaches or carriages and were companions to the horses. Since the 1950s, Dalmatians have traveled with the Budweiser Clydesdales hitch, perched atop the wagon proudly seated next to the driver. In between performances, Stock Show visitors can visit these majestic horses at their stalls in the Burnett Building and watch as they prepare to parade to Dickies Arena prior to each performance. Each horse will carry 130 pounds of harness and combined, the wagon, horses and harness weigh more than 12 tons. Now, that’s a heavy load! The Clydesdales will appear in the All Western Parade January 15 and perform at most rodeo performances beginning January 21. Check the schedule at fwssr. com for more information. Viva La Stock Show! Take A Deeper Dive Into Texas’s Hispanic Heritage Texas has a strong connection to its Spanish roots and that culture has long been celebrated at the Fort Worth Stock Show. Its popular Best of Mexico Celebración, slated for January 16, and the fun Dia de La Familia, January 23, is just the beginning of what fans can soak in in 2022. After a stellar debut in 2020, the FWSSR Texas Invitational Mariachi Competition will return January 22 showcasing top high school mariachi teams from across the state participating in a unique contest. The event is free to the public with Stock Show grounds admission. Rarely seen in the U.S., a Charro Cala clinic January 29 at 6 p.m. will feature Alejandro Goñi Rojo, one of the top horse and Cala trainers from Mexico. The cala is a slide competition much like the maneuver seen in reining horse competitions. The horse is ridden at top speed toward a point at which the rider brings it to a smooth, sliding stop that extends several feet across the arena floor. The winning rider is the one who has the skill to maneuver the longest, straightest slide. This clinic is free to the public with Stock Show grounds admission. Thanks to the law office of Domingo A. Garcia, the Texas Invitational Escaramuza will be joined in 2022 with the Charro Cala on January 30 at 11 a.m. Dating to the Mexican Revolution of 1910, Escaramuza and Charro Cala competitions are part of a traditional Charreada. Elaborate costumes, custom saddles and handcrafted tack add a uniqueness and style that make the Escaramuza and Charro Cala a must-see event. HINT: Make a reservation at Reata Backstage to dine and watch. Go to reata.net. Alejandro Goñi Rojo The Fort Worth Stock Show is celebrating 15 years of its partnership with the Mustang Heritage Foundation in the exclusive production of Mustang Magic, presented by Lone Star Ag Credit. Competition starts January 21, when Mustang Magic Rising Star trainers will amaze as they vie for a chance to compete against the Celebrities on Saturday night. January 22 will bring the best trainers and entertainers to the Coliseum for a final round to showcase the talents of their mustangs through a freestyle routine and compete for $50,000 in cash and prizes. Get your tickets early at fwssr.com as this event is always a sell-out. LUNCHEON HONORING THE WATT FAMILY PRESENTED BY LONE STAR AG CREDIT LIVESTOCK APPRECIATION DAY For 75 years, members of what could be called the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show’s first family developed and executed a game plan for successful livestock showmanagement and professional rodeo production that made the Stock Show a household name in FortWorth and beyond. It began in 1946 when Amon Carter Sr. tappedW.R. Watt, to take the reins as Stock Show president. Despite his initial reluctance, “Billy Bob’s”business acumen soon began taking the Stock Show to new heights. It was a crucial time. While the move in 1944 from the Stockyards to theWill Rogers Memorial Center brought excitement, it also presented challenges; the foremost being housing for a growing livestock show. In just two years, Billy Bob was helping oversee the construction of the iconic Swine, Sheep and Cattle Barns that are still in use today. Billy Bob also had a knack for entertainment and the rodeo personalities featured by the gifted promoter were Hollywood and Nashville royalty. At his side was son, “Bob,”who began assisting his father when he wasn’t attending school or working on the family’s ranch near Throckmorton, Texas. Bob eventually assumed the dual post of board secretary and general manager in 1973. Upon his father’s death in 1977, Bob was named president and general manager. The 1970s, 80s and 90s brought more excitement and growth under Bob’s leadership. Entries expanded tremendously as did the various competitions and scholarships. With the help of Bob’s son, Trey, who served as assistant general manager for several years, programs like the popular Calf Scramble were added, increasing opportunities for Texas 4-H and FFAmembers to compete for scholarship awards and growing auction receipts. Bob’s leadership also ushered in the largest expansion of theWill Rogers complex to date. The complex underwent a tremendous transformation with the construction of the Burnett Building, Richardson-Bass Building, Amon G. Carter Jr. Exhibits Hall, Moncrief Building and theWill Rogers Memorial Center Ticket Office and Visitor Center. Bob was a driving force in creating the public-private funding model that’s today the envy of equestrian and livestock facility managers around the nation. Bob also made his mark on the Stock Show’s rodeo. In 1978, 500 rodeo contestants competed for a $138,000 purse. By 2010, 1,287 rodeo contestants from 20 states and Canada vied for $594,000. Like his father, innovation for rodeo was also a hallmark of Bob’s career. He brought new and fresh concepts to fans wanting something more than traditional rodeo. Keeping the rodeo performances new and fresh was the goal with the addition of the Best of theWest Ranch Rodeo, Best of Mexico Celebraciòn, Cowboys of Color Rodeo and Bulls’ Night Out Xtreme Bull Riding. As President Emeritus of the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show, Bob continues to cast a long shadow across the Stock Show grounds. And, as long as there is a FortWorth Stock Show & Rodeo, theWatt Family legacy will never fade. Guest Speaker — Fred McClure Fred McClure burst on the national agriculture scene in 1974 when he was elected national FFA secretary, becoming the organization’s first African-American national officer, and later the first black student body president at Texas A&M. Today, Mr. McClure is Executive Director of The Leadership Initiative at Texas A&M University. Mr. McClure was previously the Chief Executive Officer for the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library Foundation. He has also served as Assistant for Legislative Affairs to President George H. W. Bush and as Special Assistant for Legislative Affairs to President Ronald Reagan. Mr. McClure graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in agricultural economics, earned summa cum laude honors, was chosen Phi Kappa Phi, received the BrownRudder Outstanding Student Award.
