The Burnett Ranches have become known as the Four Sixes, referring to the Brand “6666” that has been worn on cattle for more than a century. A colorful tale has grown around the origination of this now legendary brand – that Burk Burnett won the original ranch in a poker game with a winning hand of four sixes. This story is colorful but untrue. Here’s the real story: around 1867, a young Burk Burnett purchased 100 head of cattle near Denton, Texas, all of which carried this now famous brand. He bought the brand too, and continued to use it as he built his ranch empire. The purchase around 1900 of the 8 Ranch near Guthrie, Texas, in King County from the Louisville Land and Cattle Co., and the Dixon Creek Ranch near Panhandle, Texas, from the Cunard Line marked the beginning of the Burnett Ranches. The 8 Ranch became the nucleus of the present day Four Sixes Ranch. Legendary Quarter Horses and Superior Angus Cattle are hallmarks of the “Sixes.” Headquartered in the small town of Guthrie, Texas, with a population of under 200, the ranch is approximately ninety miles east of Lubbock and as you might imagine the Sixes’ is both slow paced and fast moving while seamlessly blending the time-honored traditions of nearly 150 years with the 21st century. A fully operational cattle and horse ranch, it boasts one of the most sophisticated equine breeding facilities and fully equipped veterinary clinics in the country. In 1994, the Four Sixes Ranch was honored with the AQHA Best Remuda Award for its outstanding working cow horses that tend to thousands of the ranch’s cattle. It has cultivated a steady stream of champion performance and ranch horses produced by the ranch’s elite broodmare band producing some of the elite performers and prospects available in the country. A leader in the agriculture industry, the ranch utilizes over a century of expertise in raising and marketing beef cattle by relying on tried-and-true practical experience and the improvements of modern innovations. Sustaining a long-held vision for conservation, ranch managers are dedicated to implementing practices that reflect good land stewardship while diligently making decisions to increase profitability. The respect and attention devoted to Four Sixes Ranch resources is a priority for sustaining grass, maximizing the genetic potential of beef cattle, and preserving the natural habitats of co-existing wildlife.
